A key witness in the Halkbank case in the US is expected to be sentenced soon.
NEW YORK, June 15 (Reuters) - A key cooperating witness in the U.S. government's criminal investigation into suspicions that Turkey's Halkbank helped Iran evade sanctions will be sentenced in July, nearly nine years after pleading guilty, court records showed on Monday.
Reza Zarrab is scheduled to be sentenced on July 14 in Manhattan federal court.
It is common practice in American criminal cases for cooperating witnesses not to be sentenced until the cases in which they may be called to testify have concluded.
Judge Richard Berman set this date as he separately considers a request by U.S. prosecutors to drop the case against Halkbank because of an agreement reached with the bank.
Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader, pleaded guilty on October 26, 2017, to conspiring to evade U.S. sanctions.
Zarrab testified against former Halkbank official Mehmet Hakan Atilla in a New York trial in 2017. Atilla was convicted of helping Iran evade U.S. sanctions.
