Zawya - Press Releases: Acciona succeeds in implementing a pilot project for innovative cement-free concrete paving
Acciona has developed a prototype paving system consisting of 14 precast slabs made from an innovative, cement-free concrete. This solution replaces clinker with industrial byproducts used as a binder, a crucial step towards infrastructure with a lower carbon footprint, meeting the growing demand for sustainable building solutions in the Middle East.
The pilot paving was carried out on the road leading to Acciona's equipment depot, covering an area of 108 square meters. The site will serve as a full-scale demonstration model for evaluating performance under harsh environmental conditions and heavy vehicle traffic, including high temperatures, corrosion, and other stresses common in arid and semi-arid infrastructure environments.
To produce this geopolymer concrete, Acciona used industrial byproducts including fly ash supplied from a thermal power plant and steel slag from blast furnace steelmaking, provided by CEMCO Cement Trading. These sustainable materials undergo a chemical activation process made possible through a strategic collaboration with MC Bauchemie Spain, which supplied the chemical activator and provided technical support for developing and optimizing the properties of the new concrete.
By eliminating clinker, this concrete achieves a 76% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional reference cement (CEM I). In addition to its lower environmental impact, the precast modular design simplifies manufacturing, on-site installation, and maintenance, while also supporting reuse and recycling at the end of its service life. These characteristics are particularly important in the Middle East, where large-scale infrastructure projects, logistics corridors, industrial zones, and new urban developments require robust, resource-efficient, and low-carbon construction solutions that align with national sustainability and circular economy agendas.
Acciona is participating in the European innovation project “LIAISON”, which aims to design and validate sustainable solutions for the development of low-carbon transport infrastructure, with the potential for application in international markets, including the Middle East region.
ACCIONA is a leading global provider of innovative solutions for a carbon-neutral economy. Its activities include renewable energy, water treatment and management, environmentally efficient transport and mobility systems, resilient infrastructure, and more. The company has maintained carbon neutrality since 2016. Acciona recorded sales of €8.1 billion in 2021 and has a business presence in more than 60 countries.
