Zawya - Press Releases: Al Futtaim Engineering achieves record-breaking success in MEP works at Dubai Exhibition Centre
Dubai, UAE : Al Futtaim Engineering, a subsidiary of Al Futtaim Contracting, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the mechanical and electrical systems (MEP) works at the Dubai Exhibition Centre within Expo City Dubai, developed by the Dubai World Trade Centre. The project received its Building Completion Certificate ( BCC ) and became fully operational within a record time of nine months from the start of the electromechanical works, enabling it to host major international events, including Arab Health and Gulfood.
This achievement represents one of the fastest and most complex mechanical and electrical systems projects in the region. All phases of the work, from site handover to full commissioning for events, were completed in record time, with over four million safe working hours logged.
This multi-million dollar project is one of the largest MEP projects undertaken by Al Futtaim Engineering, both in terms of scale and speed of completion. At the peak of the project, more than 200 engineers and administrators, along with 2,000 specialized workers, were involved in the electromechanical works to meet the project's demanding schedule.
The scale and complexity of the project reflect the high level of engineering involved, encompassing approximately 90 kilometers of low-voltage cables, 11 kilometers of busbar systems, and 100,000 square meters of air conditioning ductwork. The work also included 120 kilometers of fiber optic cables, 110 kilometers of 6-inch electrical conduits, and 105 kilometers of plumbing and cooling water pipes, in addition to the installation of 18,080 lighting units, forming a comprehensive, high-capacity service system capable of supporting the hosting of major exhibitions and events.
To meet the strict schedule, innovative implementation methods were adopted, including working simultaneously on installing services on both the upper and lower levels at the same location, using suspended scaffolding with limited load-bearing capacities. In addition, the project team ensured meticulous planning of the work sequence, organized material handling, and well-considered service elevation plans, all while adhering to the highest safety standards to guarantee that work progressed without compromising quality or safety .
Advanced digital building information modeling (BIM) was primarily used for the design and coordination of various systems, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, low-voltage, and fire protection systems. This approach helped avoid overlaps between services, reduced the need for redoing, and improved the efficiency of inspection and commissioning processes.
In this context , Morley Serbakam, CEO of Al Futtaim Contracting, said: “The completion of the mechanical and electrical systems works at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in less than nine months reflects a high level of organization, meticulous planning, technical expertise, and disciplined execution. Projects of this scale depend not only on human resources but also require a clear engineering vision, precise coordination, and an execution methodology capable of efficiently managing any complexities. Through the use of BIM , meticulous work sequence organization, and rigorous testing and commissioning processes, our teams ensured that all project elements were ready from day one. This achievement confirms our ability to deliver advanced infrastructure that supports major projects across the UAE.”
The successful completion of the Dubai Exhibition Centre reinforces Al Futtaim Engineering’s position as one of the leading regional companies in implementing large-scale mechanical and electrical systems projects, and contributes to supporting the development of world-class destinations and enhancing vital infrastructure.
