Salamanca, Spain – Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, President of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, the Academy inaugurated the “Sharjah Arabic Language Hall” at the University of Salamanca, Spain, in a step that reflects His Highness’s vision to enhance the presence of the Arabic language globally and consolidate its position in international academic institutions.
This came after a memorandum of understanding was signed by the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah with the University of Salamanca, which aims to support the teaching of Arabic to non-native speakers, and to provide an integrated educational environment that includes modern books and publications, in addition to organizing training courses and specialized workshops for students and teachers.
In addition to the opening of the hall, an official ceremony was held at the university headquarters in the Spanish city of Salamanca, in the presence of a number of academics and officials, where the importance of this project in promoting cultural and intellectual exchange between the Arab world and Europe was emphasized, and opening new horizons for students to study the Arabic language and literature.
Dr. Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority and member of the Board of Trustees of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, said: “The opening of the Arabic Language Hall at the University of Salamanca represents a strategic step that reflects the vision of the Emirate of Sharjah in spreading the Arabic language and enhancing its global presence. It embodies the interest of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi in the Arabic language and his keenness to support it in the most prestigious academic institutions, which contributes to building bridges of cultural communication between peoples.”
Dr. Muhammad Safi Al-Mustaghani, Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, said: “This initiative comes as part of a series of quality projects led by the Academy to spread the Arabic language and teach it to non-native speakers, as the hall represents a scientific and cultural center that serves students and researchers, and enhances the status of the Arabic language as a language of science, culture and civilization at the global level.”
For his part, Dr. Juan Manuel Corchado, Director of the University of Salamanca, expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi for his support of this project, stressing that this initiative reflects a genuine commitment to promoting cultural and intellectual dialogue between civilizations, and will contribute to the development of Arabic language education programs at the university and open new horizons for academic cooperation.
This step is the result of institutional cooperation overseen by the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, in coordination with the Department of Arabic Language and Oriental Studies at the University of Salamanca, and with direct follow-up from Dr. Laura Qaqo, an Arabist. The project to establish, furnish, and equip the hall with all the necessary electronic supplies, books, and basic publications was implemented, providing an integrated educational environment that supports teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, and contributes to enabling them to acquire it properly and master speaking and writing skills in it.
The University of Salamanca is one of the oldest European universities, having been founded in 1215 AD. It has a long history of teaching Arabic, having contributed over the centuries to establishing its presence in Europe, making the opening of the hall a qualitative addition that enhances this extended academic path.
This project embodies the extension of the Emirate of Sharjah’s efforts to support the Arabic language globally, and reflects its pioneering role in enhancing its presence in educational institutions, and consolidating its position as a bridge for cultural and intellectual communication between peoples.
