Zawya - Press Releases: Emirates Global Aluminium celebrates the launch of the largest aluminum recycling plant in the country
The United Arab Emirates – Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the UAE’s largest industrial company outside the oil and gas sector, celebrated the inauguration of the country’s largest aluminum recycling plant. The plant represents a significant step in the company’s growth in low-carbon aluminum and its support for the UAE’s circular economy.
The ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi, Hamid Al Shammari, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Emirates Global Aluminium, His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Emirates Global Aluminium, along with members of the Board of Directors and the company’s senior management team.
Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “Recycling is a key pillar of the UAE’s circular economy policy, which aims to establish the country as a global hub for green development by moving from linear production and consumption patterns to circular models, thus enhancing resource efficiency and reducing waste. Aluminum is one of the most prominent resources supporting this transformation due to its unlimited recyclability, which contributes to protecting ecosystems and building a sustainable, low-carbon economy. Recycling aluminum waste also consumes up to 95% less energy [1] compared to producing primary aluminum from raw materials, leading to reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.”
Her Excellency added: “Emirates Global Aluminium has been one of the leading industrial institutions in the country for decades, and today it continues to enhance this role through its leadership in the field of aluminum recycling as a national model to be emulated. I congratulate the company on the well-thought-out strategic expansion of its recycling activities within the UAE and globally, which reflects the close integration between industrial progress and commitment to climate action goals as two complementary paths that do not conflict.”
The aluminum recycling plant in Al Taweelah has a production capacity of 185,000 tons per year. The plant processes post-use aluminum scrap, as well as pre-use scrap, to produce high-quality, low-carbon alloys and billets. Emirates Global Aluminium markets these under the brand name "RevivAL" aluminum.
The company also produces alloys of recycled aluminum with primary aluminum produced using solar energy, which is marketed under the brand name "CelestiAL-R", and with primary aluminum produced using nuclear energy, under the brand name "MinimAL-R".
Previously, most of the aluminum scrap produced within the UAE was exported for processing, resulting in significant losses to the national economy. The aluminum recycling plant in Al Taweelah now provides the capacity to process this scrap locally, making Emirates Global Aluminium the largest consumer of aluminum scrap in the country.
The construction of the aluminum recycling plant in Taweelah took 4 million work hours and was completed without any lost-time injuries. The project also required more than 26,300 cubic meters of concrete—the volume of more than 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools—and more than 4,600 metric tons of structural steel, equivalent to about two-thirds the weight of the steel in the Eiffel Tower.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, said: “The Al Taweelah Aluminium Recycling Plant represents a milestone in the growth of the company’s recycling business and is an important step towards strengthening the circular economy in the UAE. By converting aluminum scrap into new, high-quality, low-carbon aluminum products, the plant contributes to keeping resources in use for a longer period, reducing waste and emissions, while retaining greater value within the national economy. The project also enhances the UAE’s position as a global hub for sustainable industry and supports the objectives of the ‘Make in the UAE’ initiative and the ‘Project 300 Billion’ strategy for developing the national industrial sector.”
The aluminum recycling plant in Al Taweelah began initial operations in February as part of its commissioning phase. Commissioning was halted following the Iranian attacks on Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Economic Zone on March 28. Final commissioning resumed in April, and metal production began in early May. Reaching full production capacity is expected to take approximately six months, according to the baseline schedule, depending on scrap availability.
The aluminum recycling plant in Al Taweelah, along with the planned acquisition of another recycling plant in Italy, and expansion projects in Europe and the United States, will contribute to raising the company's total recycled aluminum production capacity to more than 400,000 tons per year.
Emirates Global Aluminium acquired recycling plants in Germany and the United States in 2024 and continues to expand its operations in both countries.
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is expanding its subsidiary Lichtemetall's operations in Germany more than sixfold by building a second plant at a new site near Hanover, boosting production capacity by 150,000 tons. Construction of the plant is expected to be completed in 2028.
In Minnesota, the expansion of Emirates Global Aluminium’s Spectro Aluminum operations contributed to achieving a production capacity of 65,000 tons per year in 2025. The company is currently developing the second phase of the expansion to add 35,000 tons per year to the production capacity in 2027.
In April, Emirates Global Aluminium announced its intention to acquire an 80% stake in Italian aluminum recycling company EcoGreen, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.
