About Emirates Nuclear Energy Company
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company ( ENEC ) is a subsidiary of ADQ, one of the region's largest holding companies, with a broad portfolio of major enterprises operating in key sectors of Abu Dhabi's diversified economy. ENEC was established by decree in December 2009 by the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, and represents all aspects of the UAE's peaceful nuclear energy program.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, operated by Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), produces 40 terawatt-hours (TWh) of safe, clean, and reliable electricity around the clock for the UAE, enhancing both the nation’s energy security and sustainability. This provides up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs while reducing carbon emissions by 22.4 million tons annually. As a result, ENEC is leading the UAE’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to the nation’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. In addition to overseeing the safe operation of the Barakah plant to the highest standards, ENEC is focused on exploring opportunities to leverage its experience and expertise gained in developing large nuclear power plants through investment and collaboration. In this context, the company is studying both small reactors and advanced reactor technologies through its Advanced Nuclear Technology Program, with the aim of investing and developing these technologies both locally and internationally.
