Rabigh, Saudi Arabia - Elsewedy Electric Power Systems Projects announced the signing of a power conversion agreement between the Saudi Electricity Company and the Saudi Power Procurement Company as the main purchaser, which marks a milestone for the Rabigh 1 power plant expansion project.
The expansion of Rabigh 1 power plant is a combined-cycle gas turbine power station with an approximate generating capacity of 1200 MW. Located in Rabigh, 135 km north of Jeddah, the plant is equipped with carbon capture technologies, aligning with the Kingdom's energy transition strategy and emissions reduction plans.
The consortium of Elsewedy Electric Power Systems Projects and Siemens Energy is working to implement the project on a turnkey basis for the Saudi Electricity Company, which reinforces the company’s leading role in delivering highly efficient power infrastructure across the region.
The power conversion agreement is valued at approximately SAR 5.33 billion (USD 1.4 billion) and covers a 25-year term for power purchases, commencing commercial operation and guaranteeing a stable and reliable electricity supply to the western region of the Kingdom. The plant is expected to serve nearly 500,000 residential units annually, supporting industrial, urban, and economic development in the Kingdom.
A consortium of Elsewedy Electric Power Systems Projects and Siemens Energy is undertaking the delivery of a combined cycle power plant, built to the highest international standards on a turnkey basis. The plant operates using a multi-pole design, incorporating three highly efficient Siemens Energy SGT6-5000F gas turbines, each connected to an SGen6-1000A air-cooled generator, supported by three heat recovery steam generators with a Siemens Energy steam turbine generator designed to deliver best-in-class efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility.
The scope of work encompasses all engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning activities, along with verification of the entire plant's performance, including all auxiliary systems, electrical works, metering and control systems, and civil and marine works. Leveraging deep expertise in combined cycle technologies, seamless power plant integration, and digital control and monitoring solutions, the consortium will deliver a highly ready, responsive, and future-proof power plant. It will meet output, efficiency, and emissions requirements while enhancing operational flexibility, reliability, and long-term value for the Saudi Electricity Company .
