Zawya - Press Releases: Hamad Bin Khalifa University launches the International Islamic Association for Medical and Bioethics
Doha : The newly established International Islamic Association for Bioethics ( IIBA ), under the umbrella of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, held its first meeting, in a significant and important step towards promoting dialogue on bioethics from an Islamic perspective.
The idea for establishing the association crystallized following the resounding success of Hamad Bin Khalifa University in hosting the 17th World Congress on Biomedical Ethics in 2024, the first time it was held in the Arab world and the Middle East region. This step also builds upon the momentum generated by the "Artificial Intelligence Ethics: The Meeting of Ethical Values and the Technological Revolution" conference, which the university organized in 2025. These initiatives embody the university's unwavering commitment to promoting Islamic ethics, a field in which the Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics ( CILE ), one of the university's research centers, is a global leader, positioning the university as a premier platform for ethics across various fields, including healthcare, artificial intelligence, and sustainability.
As the institutional host of the association, Hamad Bin Khalifa University works to foster a sustainable academic community, support multidisciplinary research, and ensure that Islamic ethical perspectives and concepts are represented in global dialogues on health, technology, and society.
The association’s founding meeting was held at the university’s main campus and the Two Minarets Building in Education City, where Dr. Mohamed Ghaly, the association’s founding president, delivered an opening lecture entitled: “A Voice, Not an Echo: Islamic Medical and Bioethics in Dialogue with the World,” with the participation of a select group of scholars, researchers, students, and experts in the medical and healthcare sector.
The meeting focused on examining ethical issues related to healthcare and biomedical research from the perspective of Islamic ethical thought. It also included interactive panel discussions and a roundtable with key stakeholders entitled "Dialogue with the Healthcare and Biomedical System in Qatar."
Over two days, this meeting positioned Hamad Bin Khalifa University as a leader in shaping the future of Islamic medical and bioethics, translating the field of ethical studies into practical guidelines and strategic direction. The meeting's events included a public lecture titled "The Future of Our Bodies: Islamic Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and the Genetic Engineering Revolution," which addressed the ethical challenges associated with rapid technological advancements in the absence of necessary frameworks and standards.
Commenting on the importance of this meeting, Dr. Mohamed Ghaly, Professor of Islamic Bioethics at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, President of the Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics, and Founding President of the International Islamic Bioethics Association, said: “We are proud to host the inaugural meeting of the Association and to provide a leading global platform for Islamic bioethics, rooted in the intellectual heritage of Islamic civilization and keeping pace with contemporary ethical challenges. Through this platform and its sister initiatives in the field of Islamic ethics, Hamad Bin Khalifa University contributes to formulating enlightened, values-based concepts for dealing with ethical challenges related to artificial intelligence, public health, sustainable development, and social cohesion.”
This inaugural meeting, in general, affirms Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s position as a global authority in the field of Islamic medical and bioethics, and promotes dialogue that guides policy, fosters innovation, and links ethical thought with practical application.
