Zawya - Press Releases: Siemens Energy to supply turbines and advanced technologies for the 2.6 GW Taweelah C power plant project in Abu Dhabi

Siemens Energy will supply advanced gas and steam turbine technologies for the Taweelah C Independent Power Project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This is the third power plant at the site that Siemens Energy is supplying. The scope of supply includes three gas turbines, two steam turbines, five generators, and supporting systems for the combined-cycle power plant, with a total planned capacity of 2.6 GW.

The new station will provide the necessary flexibility, enhance the stability of the electricity grid, and support the widespread integration of renewable energy in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It has also been designed to enable the future use of carbon capture and storage technologies, in line with the UAE's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) is working with an international consortium that includes Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company of Saudi Arabia and Sembcorp Industries of Singapore to develop the project, while China Power Engineering Group Limited is handling the engineering, procurement and construction work for the plant, and Emirates Water and Electricity Company is the sole buyer of the electricity produced.

Karim Amin, Executive Board Member of Siemens Energy, said: “Gas-fired power generation and control are more important than ever, given the increasing demand and pressures on energy systems around the world to provide flexibility and reliability. We are proud to contribute to the Taweelah C project with our technologies and expertise, including providing the first HL-class gas turbine in the UAE, which boasts industry-leading performance. This achievement is an extension of our long legacy of supporting energy security and economic development in the UAE, and underscores our commitment to strategic partnerships that support the country’s ambitions.”

The components for the new power plant will be produced within Siemens Energy’s global manufacturing network, with the SGT5-9000HL gas turbines and SST5-5000 steam turbines being manufactured in Berlin and Mülheim, Germany, while the SGen5-3000W and SGen5-2000P generators will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Charlotte, USA.
