Zawya - Press Release: Tenable expands risk exposure management through real-time detection of operational technology environments to secure physical cyber systems
First published: 20-Apr-2026 14:27:56
Dubai, UAE – Tenable® Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: TENB), a leader in exposure management, today announced the launch of a new operational technology (OT) asset discovery engine. This engine enables security teams to rapidly integrate risks associated with physical cyber systems (including OT, IoT, and shadow IT) into a unified cyber exposure view. With immediate deployment capability and no additional burden on IT teams, Tenable’s new VM-Native OT Discovery (OT Discovery integrated into the vulnerability management platform) provides a fast and seamless entry point, empowering organizations to achieve a comprehensive view of both IT and OT systems and accelerate the evolution of AI-powered exposure management.
According to Gartner , "Cyberattacks and physical cyberattacks are expected to double in the next three years. The ability to manage risk in a fully integrated and transparent manner, across electronic and physical devices, has become an urgent operational necessity."1
Security teams are increasingly responsible for protecting physical electronic systems, including those in critical infrastructure. However, achieving clear visibility often requires lengthy deployments involving specialized hardware, new agents, and separately added software. Tenable has successfully eliminated these obstacles by integrating operational technology (OT) detection directly into its core risk-based vulnerability management solution within the Tenable One risk exposure management platform, eliminating the need for specialized hardware, additional agents, or extra functionality.
Physical electronic assets have become a rapidly growing and uncontrolled attack surface, stretching from production lines to AI data centers, and from HVAC systems to office printers and card readers, thus extending beyond the traditional scope of critical and industrial infrastructure. More than half of CISOs are now responsible for the security of operational technology (OT) systems,2 which have long been considered a risky blind spot when IT networks are integrated with physical electronic systems, with concerns about operational disruption hindering cybersecurity progress. As a result of this convergence, 45% of modern OT breaches originate from IT environments.3
Tenable’s early access customers from various sectors — including hospitality, financial services, education, food and beverage, and government agencies — have uncovered a large number of previously unknown operational technology and Internet of Things assets during initial deployments; most customers discovered between 100 and over 1,000 unique assets, some of which contained critical security vulnerabilities.
Customer benefits from the integrated operational technology discovery engine include:
- Accelerating compliance with operational technology security: Immediate deployment enables organizations to confidently comply with regulatory requirements and advanced auditing standards for physical electronic systems, without the need to purchase and deploy new sensors, devices, or specialized solutions designed for specific problems.
- Eliminating operational blind spots - Gaining immediate and essential visibility into hidden assets and hardware characteristics — including vendor details, model, firmware, network interface board, operating status, and more — without impacting workflow.
- Removing security silos : Integrating physical electronic asset data and risk exposure data directly into the Tenable One platform, enabling security teams to gain a comprehensive view of all cyber exposures in the organization across AI, IT, cloud, identity, and operational technology domains.
“The risks posed by physical electronic systems cannot remain a blind spot in risk management strategies,” said Eric Dorr, Executive Product Manager at Tenable. “We provide organizations with an immediate and seamless way to integrate operational technology (OT) into visibility, enabling them to gain greater visibility, meet compliance requirements, and begin mitigating risks from day one, without adding any new infrastructure.” He continued, “For our existing customers with more complex use cases, we offer Tenable OT Security, a comprehensive OT solution that provides visibility, security, and control to proactively mitigate risks across today’s rapidly converging OT and IT environments.”
The new operational technology discovery engine is now immediately available to all Tenable One , Tenable Vulnerability Management and Tenable Security Center customers.
Tenable also offers Tenable OT Security , a unified IT and OT security solution that provides continuous monitoring and threat detection capabilities for physical electronic systems within the Tenable One risk exposure management platform. Tenable One customers benefit from seamless data interoperability across different solutions, with the ability to deploy any combination of tools across teams to suit the unique needs of their environments. Tenable was recently recognized as a "Challenger" in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for CPS Protection Platforms report.4
