The Integrated Transport Centre, part of the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, announced the commencement of the first tests of Tesla's advanced self-driving technology on a number of roads in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, under driver supervision, in a step that is the first of its kind in the Emirate, within an organized framework aimed at evaluating the performance of the technology in a realistic operating environment, and verifying its readiness in terms of safety and operation .

These tests are carried out in coordination with the Legislation Laboratory at the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, reflecting strategic cooperation in supporting innovation within approved regulatory frameworks, and contributing to establishing an advanced framework for testing assistive and advanced driving technologies in the region, while ensuring a balance between safety requirements and encouraging the adoption of modern technologies .

In this context, Dr. Abdullah Hamad Al Ghafli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre , said: “The Integrated Transport Centre’s supervision of the commencement of Tesla’s advanced self-driving technology tests comes within its commitment to its regulatory and legislative role, as these tests represent a qualitative step to evaluate the technology’s performance in a realistic operating environment, and to collect the necessary data to verify its readiness before any future expansion in the scope of use .”

He added: “Through this organized framework, and in cooperation with strategic partners, we are keen to achieve a balance between supporting innovation and encouraging the adoption of smart solutions on the one hand, and ensuring the safety of road users on the other, in line with the Emirate’s directions in developing an advanced, safe and sustainable transportation system.”
