Zawya - Press Releases: Sohar Port and Freezone launches energy efficiency guide to support the industrial sector and promote sustainability
Muscat, Oman – Under the patronage of His Excellency Mohsin bin Hamad Al Hadhrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Sohar Port and Freezone, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, represented by the Oman Zero Neutrality Centre, launched the Energy Efficiency Guide for Industrial Buildings in Sohar Port and Freezone. The guide provides a practical framework to support industrial investors in improving energy efficiency, reducing operating costs, and achieving and enhancing performance within the industrial and logistics ecosystem of Sohar Port and Freezone.
The guide serves as a technical reference, providing a precise and structured methodology that enables investors and operators to assess performance, identify areas of waste, and implement specific improvement measures at the facility level. It also includes a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) related to building efficiency, such as cooling ratings, energy consumption rates, water heating energy intensity, and the performance of lighting, air conditioning, and mechanical ventilation systems, thus supporting more efficient operational and investment decisions.
His Excellency Mohsen Al-Hadhrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, stressed the importance of practical frameworks such as this guide in supporting the transformation in the energy sector, pointing to its role in enabling industrial facilities to reduce energy consumption, improve operational performance, and achieve cost efficiency, which contributes to enhancing long-term economic sustainability.
Dr. Abdullah Al Abri, Vice President of Sustainability and Acting Director of Health, Safety, Security and Environment at Sohar Port and Freezone, said: “Industrial operations receive the greatest focus in energy management, but buildings, such as offices, warehouses and workshops, also represent a significant part of total consumption and provide clear opportunities to improve efficiency. This framework provides a common practical reference for investors, contributing to the transformation of technical capabilities into measurable operational results, which enhances the role of Sohar Port and Freezone in supporting responsible and sustainable industrial growth.”
The guide is based on a set of internationally recognized standards, including ASHRAE 90.1 for energy efficiency in buildings, ASHRAE 105 for displaying and analyzing energy consumption data, the IPMVP international protocol for measuring and verifying energy efficiency performance, and ISO 6946 for the thermal performance of building components. It also aligns with the Omani Building Code and the regulations governing occupational safety and health measures in the Sultanate of Oman, as per Ministerial Decision No. (286/2008), and supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, particularly those related to increasing industrial productivity, diversifying the economy, and enhancing infrastructure efficiency.
For his part, Engineer Mohsen Al Jabri, Director General of the Oman Zero Neutrality Centre, said: “Energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective and practical paths to support the Sultanate of Oman’s drive towards reducing emissions. This guide enables energy savings of between 15% and 20% during relatively short payback periods, making it a practical and scalable model for industrial facilities and buildings, and contributing to accelerating the achievement of zero neutrality targets.”
This launch of the Sohar Port and Freezone guide reinforces its ongoing efforts to support and promote sustainable industrial development, enhance the competitiveness of the sector, and attract investments in line with the requirements of low-emission markets.
