United Arab Emirates - Sharjah: The Sharjah Museums Authority is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Sharjah Science Museum, under the slogan “Thirty Years of Scientific Giving.” This occasion recalls the journey of one of the most prominent interactive science centers in the country since its opening on April 17, 1996, and its continuous role in establishing scientific culture and promoting experiential and discovery-based learning among various segments of society.
The celebration comes as a culmination of three decades of disseminating scientific knowledge through innovative methods that combine education and practical experience, keeping pace with rapid scientific and technological developments, and enhancing the museum’s position as a cultural and educational resource that contributes to consolidating Sharjah’s presence as the capital of culture in the Arab world, as it is one of the most attractive and interactive museums in the country, and aims to stimulate scientific curiosity and imagination.
In honor of this historic anniversary, the Sharjah Science Museum is organizing a series of interactive events and programs throughout the year, with each month dedicated to a specific scientific theme. The events will begin on April 17, and will include initiatives, family science workshops, and observations of celestial bodies, in a rich experience that combines fun and knowledge, in addition to showcasing prominent milestones in the museum’s journey, development, and pioneering role.
The "With the Family Towards Science" initiative will launch next May, along with a range of interactive activities, to mark the Year of the Family and International Museum Day. June will be dedicated to celebrating World Environment Day, with family science workshops as part of Environment and Sustainability Month. July will feature "Moon Day" and family science workshops as part of Space and Moon Month. The "Summer is Sweeter with the Family" program will run throughout August as part of the 2026 summer programs, while September will host the "Science Challenge with Families" program, specifically designed for people with hearing impairments, along with family science workshops, as part of programs tailored to this group.
October celebrates the International Day of Older Persons and World Space Week 2026, along with interactive initiatives targeting various age groups. November continues its momentum with the Science Challenge with Families and diverse scientific initiatives during Innovation, Child, and Family Month. The year's programs conclude in December with special events for National Day, in a festive atmosphere that reflects the museum's role in connecting scientific knowledge with national and community occasions.
The museum has witnessed remarkable development in the scope of its programs and scientific content since its opening. From its inception, it adopted an approach based on presenting science in interesting interactive ways that allow visitors to experience science for themselves and link theoretical concepts to practical life. This reflects the success of its educational programs and the expansion of its interactive activities. Initiatives such as the Summer of Science and Innovation events and seasonal camps have contributed to enhancing its position as an interactive educational destination for families and students alike.
The museum has strengthened its presence and influence through cooperation and partnership with a number of scientific and academic bodies. In addition to being a member of the Arab Astronomical Domes Association, it has successfully collaborated with the Emirates Astronomical Society, the International Astronomy Center, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, the Sharjah Academy for Space Sciences and Technology, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Smart Learning Initiative, the Emirates Foundation for Young People’s Books, the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, Sharjah Municipality, the University of Sharjah, the American University of Sharjah, Khalifa University, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, and other entities that have contributed to enriching its programs, expanding its impact, and providing educational experiences based on best practices in the field of museum education.
The museum includes various scientific and educational facilities. In the main exhibition hall, the museum allows visitors to interact directly with interactive exhibits that cover multiple scientific fields, including physics, biology, astronomy, physiology, sound and light, thus enhancing the practical understanding of scientific concepts through touch, experience and discovery.
The planetarium, one of the first in the country, is another major attraction within the museum. It offers interactive astronomical displays that provide visitors with a window into planets, stars, and cosmic phenomena, allowing them to follow local and global astronomical events in a visually engaging way. This is further enhanced by the nearly 15 live science demonstrations in the lecture hall, covering diverse topics such as static electricity, lasers, extreme cold physics, the digestive system, and the origins of the Earth. There are also simplified presentations for children that highlight the beauty of science, simplify its concepts, and celebrate the wonder of scientific discovery.
The museum's educational center plays a pivotal role in supporting its educational mission, housing a science lab, an exploration area, and classrooms equipped to suit different grade levels. The center offers more than 30 workshops, enabling students to gain in-depth scientific experience in the fields of science and technology, and welcomes students from public and private schools across the country, as well as members of the wider community.
The museum's role extends beyond exhibits and workshops, encompassing a wide range of scientific programs and activities throughout the year. These include interactive family workshops in the evenings, children's camps during school holidays, and events for holidays and official breaks. In addition, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions showcasing the latest scientific innovations, features prominent scientific figures, and organizes diverse programs related to global and local events such as World Space Week and International Children's Day. The museum further enhances its comprehensive experience through a range of supporting facilities and services. These include a dedicated play area for children under four, a thinking and learning corner featuring puzzles and brain games, a café serving drinks and snacks, an educational gift shop, and facilities adapted for people with disabilities and the elderly, reflecting its commitment to making scientific knowledge accessible and inclusive for all .
On both the cultural and educational levels, the Sharjah Science Museum plays an active role in establishing scientific awareness within the community, through enjoyable educational programs that link the scientific concept with its practical applications, and encourage visitors to innovate, think critically and explore. It has succeeded in transforming science into a vibrant experience that enriches the imagination and feeds their passion for discovery.
Visitors can enjoy a complete scientific and exploratory experience with their family through the combined ticket that allows entry to both the Sharjah Science Museum and the Sharjah Archaeology Museum at the same time, given the close distance between them, which does not exceed about 220 meters, giving visitors a unique opportunity to move smoothly between two knowledge experiences that enrich their understanding of history and science within one visit .
