Zawya - Press Releases: Envision Energy signs agreement with SOLA Group and WBHO to develop a 660 MWh battery energy storage system for one of South Africa's largest private energy projects.

Envision Energy , a global leader in green technologies, announced a new agreement with Sola Group and WBHO to supply a 660 MWh battery energy storage ( BESS ) system for its flagship Naos-1 project. Naos-1 is the largest private-sector contracted hybrid renewable energy initiative to achieve financial closure in South Africa and underscores the country’s ambitious efforts to transition to more resilient, market-competitive, and low-carbon energy systems. This agreement marks a significant milestone in Envision Energy ’s expansion across Africa and reinforces its commitment to accelerating the region’s renewable energy transition through a comprehensive portfolio of renewable energy solutions.

Located near Viljoenskroon in South Africa’s Free State, the Naos-1 facility comprises a 300 MW photovoltaic solar power plant and a 660 MWh battery energy storage system to provide the country’s major private companies with renewable, reliable, and deployable power. Designed to transmit electricity to the national grid, the project enables the supply of clean electricity generated on-site to consumers across the country. By combining solar power generation capacity with battery energy storage technologies, the Naos-1 facility helps address the challenges that can arise from renewable energy outages and enhances grid stability.

Based on its vertically integrated expertise in battery energy storage systems ( BESS ), which spans the entire value chain, Envision Energy will provide comprehensive technical support for the project, including the design, manufacturing, operation, and maintenance of the energy storage system. Envision Energy will also leverage its advanced battery technologies and AI-powered energy management system to support intelligent energy system optimization and ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation throughout the project's lifecycle. Furthermore, the 25-year Long-Term Service Agreement ( LTSA ) signed between Envision and SOLA Group will provide a comprehensive framework to support the continuity of project operation and maintenance, ensuring the ongoing development of South Africa's renewable energy ecosystem.

In this context, John Lee, General Manager for the Middle East and Africa at Envision Energy , said: “ The Naos-1 facility demonstrates how integrated renewable energy solutions with energy storage systems can redefine future energy systems, not only providing clean energy but also ensuring grid reliability and resilience, as well as creating economic value on a large scale.” He added: “ Envision is proud to support this landmark project and to collaborate with leading partners to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy future in South Africa and emerging markets around the world.”

Ian Berger, Managing Director of SOLA Build within the SOLA Group , said: “Companies across South Africa and beyond are looking for innovative energy solutions that balance sustainability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. The Naos-1 facility represents a new generation of energy infrastructure that is flexible, scalable, and aligned with the needs of modern energy markets.” He added: “Our collaboration with experienced technology partners like Envision Energy will pave the way for new avenues to enhance private sector participation in the energy sector and support efforts to develop a more resilient and future-proof energy system.”
