US jobless claims rise less than expected
WASHINGTON, May 7 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose less than expected last week amid a decline in layoffs that helped stabilize the labor market.
The U.S. Labor Department said Thursday that initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 200,000 for the week ending May 2. This increase offset some of the decline seen the previous week.
The unemployment claims data does not affect the closely watched April jobs report due to be released on Friday.
