- The Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq indexes opened lower on Thursday, as chip stocks were hit by Broadcom's earnings report that fell short of expectations, while equity investors cut back on buying after a strong rally that pushed the indexes to record highs.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 299 points, or 0.59 percent, to 50,986.1 points. The S&P 500 opened 37.1 points, or 0.49 percent, lower at 7,516.54 points, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 274.7 points, or 1.02 percent, to 26,579.297 points.
