- The Trump administration is pressuring Meta to voluntarily submit its artificial intelligence models for review, which would allow the government to assess its capabilities and weaknesses, The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing four sources familiar with the matter.

The report indicated that the request was made via emails addressed to the social media giant, as part of the US administration's intensified oversight of the artificial intelligence sector.

The report stated that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, which launched its artificial intelligence model (Muse Spark) in April, is the only major developer of artificial intelligence technology in the United States that has not yet reached an agreement to voluntarily share its models with the federal government for review.

Meta told Reuters in an emailed response, "We share the administration's goal of strengthening U.S. leadership in advanced and robust artificial intelligence. As we work out the details of the agreement, we hope to sign it soon."

The U.S. Commerce Department has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment.

Earlier this month, the US government ordered Anthropic to suspend foreigners' access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models, citing national security concerns.

Concerns are growing in Washington about the risks that powerful artificial intelligence systems pose to national security. By securing early access to leading models, US officials aim to identify threats ranging from cyberattacks to military misuse before these tools are widely deployed.

On June 2, Trump signed an executive order establishing a voluntary framework for AI developers to submit "covered lead models" to the U.S. government for up to 30 days before making them available to trusted partners.
