Callas: We were surprised by the timing of the announcement of the plans to withdraw US troops from Germany.
BRUSSELS, May 4 (Reuters) - The timing of the United States' announcement of its plan to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany came as a surprise, said Kaya Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, on Monday.
"The timing of this announcement is surprising," Callas said upon arriving at the European Political Community summit in Armenia. "I think it shows the need to strengthen the European pillar of NATO, and the need to make more efforts."
She added, "The presence of American forces in Europe is not only to protect European interests, but also includes protecting American interests."
