Kaizer Chiefs top Group D in the Confederation Cup, Zamalek drop to second place and Al Masry to third.
February 8 (Reuters Sports Service) - South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs topped Group D of the African Confederation Cup on Sunday after beating Egypt's Al Masry 2-1 in the penultimate round of the group stage.
Kaizer Chiefs raised their tally to ten points to take first place, two points ahead of Zamalek, who dropped to second place after losing to Zesco United of Zambia, while Al Masry's tally remained frozen at seven points in third place.
Kaizer Chiefs took the lead in the 39th minute with a goal scored by Flavio Silva from a penalty kick, which he placed to the left of Al Masry goalkeeper Mahmoud Hamdi .
The referee awarded the penalty kick after a handball by Al Masry defender Ahmed Ayman Mansour.
Al Masry equalized with a goal in the 57th minute, scored by Abdel Rahim Daghmoum from a cross sent by Hassan Ali, which reached Daghmoum, who shot a ball from inside the penalty area into the net .
Only four minutes after Al Masry’s goal, Kaizer Chiefs managed to score their second goal, taking the lead again in the 61st minute through Aden McCarthy, after a cross into the Egyptian penalty area was headed by Cuenca, but the goalkeeper saved the ball and McCarthy followed it into the net .
Zamalek lost to their host Zesco United by a single goal, which came from a penalty kick in the 61st minute scored by Amine Hever.
Zesco dominated possession of the ball during the first half and had several attacking attempts that failed to threaten Zamalek's goal.
