- The U.S. military said it would launch fresh strikes on Iran on Tuesday after President Donald Trump vowed to retaliate for the overnight downing of a U.S. Apache attack helicopter, in the latest escalation between Washington and Tehran that threatens a fragile ceasefire.

The US Central Command said in a statement that the "defensive strikes" began at 5 p.m. Washington time on the orders of Trump.

The command added in its statement, "This mission is a proportionate response to unjustified Iranian aggression."

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an Iranian attack drone shot down the Apache. Central Command reported that the two-man crew was rescued using a maritime drone, a first of its kind, and that their condition was stable .
