March 31 (Reuters) - Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said on Tuesday that his country would stay out of a US-Israeli war on Iran unless it was attacked or diplomatic solutions were exhausted.
Al-Sharaa stated in a speech during an event hosted by the Chatham House think tank in London that Syria would remain outside of any conflict unless it was targeted by any party.
He stressed that he did not want Syria to turn into a battlefield, but said that things were not being managed wisely today, describing the situation as volatile and chaotic.
The month-long conflict has spread across the region, leaving thousands dead, disrupting energy supplies, and threatening to cause a collapse in the global economy.
In response to a question about whether Syria would remain neutral as the conflict continued, al-Sharaa said he wanted his country to have ideal relations with the entire region, particularly Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, as well as global powers such as Britain, France, Germany and the United States.
He added that he believes Syria is qualified to start a network of strategic relationships.
Syria has been careful to distance itself from the regional conflict that has drawn in neighboring countries, including Lebanon, where Hezbollah is engaged in fierce battles with Israeli ground forces, and Iraq, where pro-Iranian factions are launching drone and missile attacks.
Syria deployed thousands of troops to its western border with Lebanon and its eastern border with Iraq earlier this month. The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that the deployment was part of efforts to protect and control the borders amid escalating conflict in the region.
Al-Sharaa said that Syria has fought enough wars and paid a heavy price, indicating that Damascus is not ready to experience another war.
