DUBAI, March 31 (Reuters) - Iran's opposition group, the People's Mujahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), said Tehran executed two men linked to the group, adding to two others executed on Monday, confirming a report published by the judiciary's news agency.
The judiciary's news agency had previously stated that the two men were convicted of belonging to the People's Mujahedin Organization and involvement in several attacks, including firing rocket-propelled grenades at a government building.
Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the political arm of the People's Mujahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), confirmed the executions. In a statement, she said, "They were courageous men who did not bow to any torture or pressure, and remained steadfast in their commitment and promise until the end."
She added that a number of members of the People's Mujahedin Organization and other political prisoners are still awaiting execution, and called for international action to save their lives.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran, also known by its Persian name "Mujahedin-e Khalq", is banned in Iran, and it is unclear how much support it enjoys there.
However, along with his royalist rivals who support Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Shah who lives abroad, he is one of the few opposition groups capable of rallying supporters.
A month after the outbreak of its war with the United States and Israel, Iran is trying to prevent any spark of internal unrest through arrests, executions, and the massive deployment of security forces and supporters in the streets, even recruiting children to work at checkpoints.
Although there are few signs so far that people are defying stern warnings not to protest, officials fear that the damage to the already battered economy could spur increased opposition to the ruling regime once the conflict is over.
