June 2 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms said on Tuesday it is expanding content settings for younger users' accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger globally to ensure appropriate experiences for younger users, as social media platforms face increased scrutiny over children's health and safety.
This initiative, launched in select countries last October, aims to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content. Meta also announced a new feature on Instagram designed to diversify the content teenagers see and prevent repeated exposure to certain topics.
In April, Meta warned investors that legal and regulatory actions in the European Union and the United States related to young people's access to social media "could significantly impact our business and financial results."
Meta stated that the (13+) setting in the settings, which excludes content deemed unsuitable for teenagers, will be fixed on teenagers' accounts.
She explained that the "restricted content" feature will also be available on Facebook and Messenger later this year.
Instagram is testing a new feature to limit teenagers' exposure to certain types of content. Meta said, "We recognize that some content, such as posts about nutrition, weightlifting, or how to manage anxiety, can be helpful, but it should be balanced with other forms of content rather than being shown repeatedly."
