PRESSR: Sharjah Book Authority opens registration for Sharjah Translation Award “Tarjuman 2024”

Announcing the winners of the opening ceremony of the 43rd session of the "Sharjah International Book Fair"

Sharjah, Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) has announced the opening of registration for the seventh edition of the Sharjah Translation Award (Tarjuman), the first literary award of its kind, which aims to spread Arabic literature globally by encouraging publishers to translate distinguished works by Arab writers and authors into foreign languages.

The award, worth AED 1.4 million, honours works translated from and into Arabic that contribute to enhancing cultural and civilisational communication and introducing the world to the gems of Arabic literature and its intellectual and creative aesthetics. This year’s edition is being held with the support and sponsorship of the Al Marwan Group.

The Authority will continue to receive nominations until August 31, 2024, while the names of the winners will be announced during the opening ceremony of the 43rd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair.

Commenting on the importance of this year’s edition of the award, His Excellency Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, stressed that the Sharjah Translation Award (Tarjuman) embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, which aims to support the Arabic and international translation movement with the aim of consolidating cultural and civilizational communication. It also comes within the framework of the directives of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Book Authority, calling for emphasizing the centrality of literature and knowledge in enhancing communication and dialogue between the world’s cultures based on the values of understanding and human dialogue.

Celebrating the translation movement and honoring distinguished works

The award is open to Arab and international publishing houses that have published books translated from original Arabic works in their first edition. To participate in the award, the publishing house must send 4 paper copies of the translated book, along with one copy of the Arabic book, along with a written summary in Arabic or the translation language not exceeding 500 words that includes a definition of the author, the content of the nominated book and its importance, in addition to providing proof of intellectual property rights and all documents related to the legitimacy of translation, publication and circulation.

The award honors all those involved in the translation process, with the translator receiving 100,000 dirhams, the foreign publishing house that published the translation receiving 70% of the remaining amount, and the Arab publishing house that published the original edition in Arabic receiving 30% of it.
