US documents: Dr. Mehmet Oz invited Epstein to a Valentine's Day party

From Ahmed Abu El-Enein

- U.S. Justice Department documents show that Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trump's pick to run the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, emailed sex offender Jeffrey Epstein an invitation to a Valentine's Day party in 2016.

The Justice Department released millions of documents related to Epstein in recent months, complying with a bipartisan congressional law. The files revealed new details about Epstein's relationships with prominent figures in politics, business, and academia.

Oz, a former celebrity doctor and television presenter, sent the invitation nearly a decade after Epstein was first charged with sex crimes in July 2006. The businessman died by suicide in 2019 while in custody awaiting trial on charges of human trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The email, dated February 1, 2016, and addressed from Oz and his wife to Epstein, is titled "Mohammed and Lisa Oz's Valentine's Day Celebration" and contains a link to a digital invitation.

Oz is not accused of any wrongdoing related to the Epstein scandal.

The Department of Health and Human Services did not respond to a request for comment.

Oz's name appeared several other times in the files, including an email sent from an account bearing his name to Epstein on January 1, 2016, titled "Dr. Oz." The full text of the email was redacted.

Oz, 65, gained considerable fame as a heart and chest surgeon and for presenting "The Dr. Oz Show" for more than a decade to give medical advice.
