Akamai (AKAM) Stock Slides As Profit Shrinks Under AI Buildout Costs
Akamai Technologies, Inc. AKAM | 0.00 |
The market just knocked Akamai Technologies down almost 7% in a single session, yet the story behind the earnings is more about profit pressure than a broken growth pitch. Coming into this report the stock had already slipped over the past quarter, so expectations were not euphoric. The headline today is that heavy cloud infrastructure spending and higher operating costs are squeezing margins even as revenue reached about US$1.10b.
For an investor, the immediate question is whether this margin hit is a temporary investment phase or a reset in what Akamai’s earnings power looks like from here. The rest of this report examines that trade off.

AI and security growth thesis partly on track
Bulls argue Akamai is becoming an AI and security infrastructure platform that can more than offset legacy CDN pressure. Q2 gives this view some support. Cloud Infrastructure Services revenue reached US$99m and grew 39% year on year, which lines up with earlier claims that AI workloads are starting to fill new capacity. Security revenue of US$604m grew 10% and reflects continued demand for Zero Trust and micro segmentation, helped by the LayerX and NVIDIA tie ups. Multiyear CIS commitments above US$2.8b, including a US$600m GPU deal and the Anthropic contract, show customers are willing to lock in Akamai for AI inference. The catch is timing. Management highlighted a 6 to 9 month lag before large deals show up fully in revenue, so the thesis of a richer mix in AI and security is advancing but not yet fully visible in the income statement.
Margin strain and capex keep Akamai bears vocal
Bears focus on whether Akamai is trading long term AI hopes for weaker earnings quality and compressed margins today. Q2 margin data and guidance give that concern real footing. Non GAAP EPS fell 8% year on year even as revenue grew 5%. Non GAAP operating margin sat at 25% while CapEx climbed to US$347m, which is 32% of revenue, with full year 2026 CapEx guided to about 40% of revenue and Q3 as high as 43% to 46%. Management paused buybacks after repurchasing about US$616m of stock year to date and raised US$3.5b of zero coupon converts to fund GPU and CIS build outs. Delivery revenue declined 6% year on year, so the legacy CDN drag is visible while the new CIS revenue base is still small. That mix, plus a 6.76% share price drop on the day, shows the margin and execution worries are not being dismissed.
