Those following along with Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) will no doubt be intrigued by the recent purchase of shares by Albert Bourla, Chairman of the Board & CEO of the company, who spent a stonking US$1.0m on stock at an average price of US$26.34. There's no denying a buy of that magnitude suggests conviction in a brighter future, although we do note that proportionally it only increased their holding by 9.6%.

Pfizer Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent purchase by Albert Bourla is the biggest insider purchase of Pfizer shares that we've seen in the last year. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$26.79 per share to be enticing. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. The good news for Pfizer share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 114.86k shares for US$3.0m. On the other hand they divested 5.28k shares, for US$135k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Pfizer insiders. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 0.03% of Pfizer shares, worth about US$44m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Pfizer Insider Transactions Indicate?

The recent insider purchases are heartening. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. Insiders likely see value in Pfizer shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company).
