Align Technology walked into this earnings season with a premium P/E near 30x and a stock that had slipped over the past month. The market’s first verdict was harsh, as shares fell about 3.7% to around US$173 after the report.

The headline is not demand. Clear Aligner revenue reached about US$871m on record case volume and helped push non GAAP operating margin to 22.9%. The real story is the squeeze between that healthy aligner engine and a weaker Systems and Services business, which left earnings growth looking more modest than the long term thesis might suggest.

Align bullish story leans on aligner engine proof

Bulls argue that Align Technology is a durable clear aligner platform where volume growth, higher value cases and digital tools support revenue and margin progress over time. Q2 gives that argument real backing. Clear Aligner revenue reached US$871m with 692,000 cases, up faster than group revenue, and record international volume across APAC, EMEA and Latin America. Teen and growing patient cases of 240,000 and higher utilization show deeper penetration, not just more doctors. ASP held at about US$1,260 per case and even ticked up year on year, which pushes back on fears of broad price erosion. Non GAAP gross margin of 72.3% and operating margin of 22.9% improved alongside this, helped by better manufacturing efficiency and lower refinement rates. That combination of volume, pricing resilience and margin expansion is a key milestone for the long term platform narrative.

Bear case focuses on scanners, growth mix and risk

Bears focus on slowing structural growth, scanner weakness and rising risk. Q2 revenue grew about 4.3% while non GAAP net income fell around 13%, so earnings did not keep pace with sales. Systems and Services revenue declined 10.8% despite double digit unit placements, as Align shifted to lower scanner ASPs and more leasing. That validates concerns about capital equipment pricing and mix pressuring margins, even though management frames it as an intentional tradeoff. Guidance for full year 2026 revenue growth of 3% to 4% and Q3 revenue of US$1.00b to US$1.02b keeps the company in a mid single digit growth lane. The EU antitrust probe and senior legal leadership change also keep regulatory risk in view. The post earnings share price move, with the stock down about 3.7%, suggests the market is still weighing these structural and governance questions against the strong aligner engine.

After Align Technology’s scanner reset, EU probe and earnings drag, it is fair to ask whether this is isolated noise or an early signal of broader structural issues. Review our independent risk analysis for Align Technology which shows 1 important warning sign
