Amcor (AMCR) Stock Profit Strength Leaves Deleveraging Questions Unanswered
AMCOR PLC AMCR | 0.00 |
Amcor stock barely flinched after earnings, slipping just 0.4% to US$46.38, even though the packaging giant posted one of its cleanest profit runs in years. The market reaction looks muted compared with a quarter that delivered Q4 adjusted earnings per share of US$1.23 and full year adjusted earnings per share of US$4.02.
The real story sits beyond today’s tick-by-tick move. Amcor is focusing on margins and cash generation while carrying a leverage ratio of about 3.5x and a dividend yield above 5%. The question for long term holders is how that profit engine and balance sheet share the load from here.

Amcor bull case hinges on synergies and cash proof points
The bullish story around Amcor is that the Berry deal lifts earnings quality, supports the dividend and funds gradual deleveraging. The first year of numbers gives some proof points. Q4 adjusted EPS grew 23% while full year adjusted EPS reached US$4.02, which lines up with a thesis built on higher margins rather than aggressive volume bets. Management has already delivered US$285m of synergies in FY 2026, around 10% ahead of the initial year one target, and has secured about US$140m of annualised growth awards versus a US$280m three year goal. That is concrete progress on both cost and revenue synergies.
At the same time, free cash flow of US$1.3b came in below expectations and leverage sits around 3.5x. So the earnings and synergy legs of the bull case are tracking well, while the cash and balance sheet leg still has more to prove.

The bearish view on Amcor has been that weak volumes, slow revenue synergies and a stretched balance sheet would keep earnings and the share price stuck. The latest numbers only partly disarm that story. Volumes are no longer clearly rolling over, with Q4 comparable volumes slightly positive and some categories like foodservice and pet care improving. That chips away at fears of structural demand erosion.
The louder warning signal now sits in cash and leverage. Free cash flow of US$1.3b missed the prior outlook by about US$200m and leverage is still around 3.5x, despite a full year of integration. Management points to temporary working capital and integration costs, yet the bears’ concern that synergy headlines arrive faster than cash and degearing looks valid for now. With revenue synergies only about halfway to the three year target, timing risk has not been cleared.
