American Well stock jumped almost 25% to US$13.02 today, a sharp move for a telehealth platform that is still reporting losses and modest revenue. The market is cheering one thing above all else. Q2 brought the closest the company has been to breakeven adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, with an adjusted EBITDA loss of about US$1.2m on US$52m of revenue.

That shift in the profit trajectory, supported by a cash pile of roughly US$196m and no debt, is what now matters more than any single quarter’s revenue line. The rest of the earnings story flows from that margin grind toward sustainability.

Is American Well’s sharp move just sentiment chasing breakeven, or does the current price already assume a full turnaround in margins and growth? See how the stock screens on our valuation analysis for American Well

American Well’s Bull Story Hangs On Profit Mix Shift

Bulls argue American Well is turning into a higher margin infrastructure and subscription business, supported by federal wins and cost cuts. The Q2 numbers show real progress on that playbook. Subscription revenue is now more than half of total revenue and grew slightly sequentially, even as total revenue declined. AMG visit revenue is higher and paid visits are roughly flat, while revenue per visit is higher, which supports the claim of a shift toward higher value programs.

The more important milestone is profitability. Operating expenses fell sharply and adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to about US$1.2m. That is consistent with management’s goal of breakeven adjusted EBITDA and positive operating cash flow in Q4 2026. The DHA intent to award is not yet a contracted revenue stream, but it supports the idea that American Well’s platform is being treated as core infrastructure by large customers.

American Well Bear Case Still Sees Revenue Fragility

Bears argue American Well is stuck with fragile revenue that leans too heavily on shrinking government and software contracts, with visit growth and pricing unable to fill the hole. Q2 leans toward their side on the top line. Total revenue fell 26.6% year on year and subscription revenue fell 36.5%, even though it now makes up more than half of sales. Management cites portfolio pruning, but the burden of proof now sits with future quarters to show this is a reset rather than structural pressure.

The bear narrative on profitability and cash burn is only partly challenged. Adjusted EBITDA is close to breakeven and operating expenses fell sharply, so near term dilution risk looks lower. However, guidance still calls for a full year adjusted EBITDA loss and Q3 margins are expected to step back. Until subscription revenue stabilizes more clearly, the core revenue durability worry remains intact.
