Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) is the second largest publicly traded company in the world and remains a popular stock with retail investors. As the company is set to make a major CEO change soon, Benzinga asked its viewers how many have owned Apple stock in the past and how many currently own shares.
Apple Stock Ownership
Apple celebrated its 50th anniversary as a company in 2026. The company went public in December 1980. Today, Apple is worth $4.46 trillion and was the first company to reach the $1 trillion, $2 trillion, and $3 trillion market cap milestones.
Benzinga viewers of "PreMarket Playbook" were asked about their past and current Apple stock ownership during the Thursday, Aug. 13 episode.
“Apple stock has been public since 1980. Which of the following best describes you?” Benzinga asked.
The results are:
- Traded Apple stock, but don’t own: 41%
- Never owned Apple stock (outside ETFs/mutual funds): 36%
- Currently own Apple stock: 23%
The poll results show that 41% of viewers polled have owned Apple stock in the past, but don’t currently own it. Add this to the 20% who said they currently own Apple stock, and the amount of people who have owned Apple stock at some point would be 64%.
The remaining 36% of viewers said they have never owned Apple stock outside of ETFs or mutual funds that own Apple stock, which would give them indirect ownership.
"PreMarket Playbook" airs on YouTube Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. ET and is hosted by Ryan Faloona. The poll in this story featured responses from 218 viewers.
Comparing with Tesla Stock
For comparison, Benzinga asked the same question about Tesla stock recently. In that poll, 214 viewers answered the following:
- Traded Tesla before, but don’t own: 53%
- Never owned Tesla stock (outside ETFs/mutual funds): 27%
- Currently own Tesla stock: 20%
The polls show that, based on the small sample of Benzinga daily viewers, more have owned Tesla stock than Apple stock, even though Apple has been public for a significantly longer time.
Both Tesla and Apple remain popular stocks with Benzinga viewers and readers. In the first half of 2026, the stocks ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, for searches on Benzinga Pro.
What’s Next for Apple

Pressure could come to Ternus immediately, with Apple hosting an event on Sept. 9 to announce and unveil new products. The event is expected to feature more details on the company’s iPhone 18 lineup.
