ATN International stock surged 27.6% to US$30.63 today, and the market is treating this quarter as a clean break from the past. The emotional trigger is simple. A telecom that had been grinding through modest revenue shifts just reported quarterly basic earnings per share of US$10.87 and trailing basic earnings per share of US$10.42, heavily shaped by a large non recurring gain from its United States tower sale.

The question now is whether that one time windfall justifies such a sharp repricing, or whether traders are ignoring what the underlying telecom business actually earned.

Love the dramatic EPS increase at ATN International, but it appears to be tied to a one-time gain rather than the core telecom business. ATN International: Bull Case Meets Real Operating Gains

Bulls argue ATN International is shifting from subsidy heavy, construction led projects to a more predictable, higher margin broadband and mobile platform. The latest quarter gives that view some support. Revenue rose to US$184.5 million with growth in both U.S. and international segments, and adjusted EBITDA reached US$49.7 million with margin expanding to 27%. That margin lift, also seen in the U.S. at 21.6% and international at 36.9%, points to the cost discipline and ARPU and churn work that management has been highlighting. International revenue held up despite the expiry of U.S. Virgin Islands support, which suggests underlying demand in places like Guyana and Cayman is doing some heavy lifting. The tower sale proceeds cut net leverage to about 0.91x and left ATN with US$332 million of cash, which gives the company more room to keep funding broadband buildouts without stretching the balance sheet.

ATN International: Bear Concerns On Quality Of Earnings

Bears worry that ATN International leans too hard on one time items and government support and that cash generation and margins are fragile. This quarter does not fully clear that concern. Headline EPS of more than US$10 per share mostly reflects a US$230 million gain from the U.S. tower sale. Management also flagged a recurring drag of about US$1 million per month from lost tower rent, which is built into guidance and will sit on run rate earnings. Net cash from operations is lower by about US$6.3 million year to date, partly due to tower sale timing, so cash conversion has not obviously improved. The expiry of U.S. Virgin Islands subsidies already clipped reported international revenue growth, which shows how exposed ATN remains to public funding and reimbursement calendars even as core operations appear to be getting healthier.

After such a large one off gain and ongoing reliance on support and subsidies, it is worth asking if ATN International has deeper structural vulnerabilities. Review the full risk analysis for ATN International which shows 3 important warning signs
