BLS nominee Matsumoto declines to comment on Trump's 'faked' data accusation against predecessor

- Brett Matsumoto, an economist nominated by President Donald Trump to be the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner, declined on Wednesday to comment on the substance of Trump's claims that the previous head of the agency had "faked" U.S. employment data.

The president's remarks "speak for themselves," Matsumoto told a Senate committee reviewing his nomination. He added that he would follow the law, and if confirmed to the role, would ensure that the data collected and processed by career BLS staff would be the figures the agency published.

Trump fired the previous BLS commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, last August following the release of a monthly employment report that included historically large revisions to previously reported figures on job creation.
