The scare will fuel calls for tougher cyber defenses and regulation. Rapid advances and volatile financial assumptions will quickly outdate efforts to curb agents or open-source models.

OpenAI said in a blog post on July 21 that an autonomous agent powered by its advanced artificial intelligence models went rogue during a security test and compromised the infrastructure of Hugging Face, a platform for sharing open-source AI models, tools and data.
The ChatGPT creator was testing the capabilities of some of its most advanced models in a controlled environment, but the agent escaped containment, reached the internet and broke into Hugging Face to satisfy its testing goal.
