We wouldn't blame Ormat Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:ORA) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Assaf Ginzburg, the Chief Financial Officer recently netted about US$2.1m selling shares at an average price of US$135. That diminished their holding by a very significant 89%, which arguably implies a strong desire to reallocate capital.

Ormat Technologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Chief Financial Officer Assaf Ginzburg was not their only sale of Ormat Technologies shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$113 per share in a -US$2.3m sale. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$132). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was 82% of Assaf Ginzburg's stake.

I will like Ormat Technologies better if I see some big insider buys.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 0.3% of Ormat Technologies shares, worth about US$22m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Ormat Technologies Tell Us?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. But since Ormat Technologies is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company.
