Diana Shipping (DSX) Stock Looks Cheap But Debt Still Clouds The Story
Diana Shipping Inc. DSX | 0.00 |
Diana Shipping walked into this earnings season with a value label and a recent share price that had climbed about 16% over the past month. The stock then slipped about 1.6% today to US$2.51, which might suggest a cooler reaction than the income statement deserves.
The headline is that Q2 time charter revenues reached US$57.3m while net income came in at US$20.8m, supported by strong time charter equivalent rates and very high fleet utilization. For a dry bulk operator where day rates and ship deployment drive everything, these numbers give investors a firmer footing than today’s small price drop implies.
Is Diana Shipping a genuine value opportunity at a 5.3x P/E, or are the one off gains and weak interest cover masking the real picture? See how the stock screens on our valuation analysis for Diana Shipping

Diana Shipping earnings, testing the optimistic thesis
Bulls argue that Diana Shipping is a cash generative dry bulk platform with visible earnings from medium to long term charters and improving operating efficiency. Q2 moves this thesis forward in several areas. Time charter revenues rose to US$57.3m and fleet TCE of about US$16,600 per day sat essentially in line with the reported cash breakeven of US$16,859 per day, which supports the claim that contracted cover can support cash flow. Revenue coverage of 88% of remaining 2026 days at about US$18,337 per day and early 2027 cover at US$18,807 per day highlight the charter uplift that bullish investors have been looking for. Management also points to high liquidity of about US$118m and continued deleveraging as evidence that the balance sheet can support future fleet renewal, even though only two methanol dual fuel Kamsarmax newbuilds are currently scheduled.
Diana Shipping risks, where the bear case still bites
The bearish narrative focuses on aging tonnage, rising regulatory costs and the risk that supply growth caps charter rates. Q2 results only partially soften those worries. The fleet remains 36 vessels with an average age of 12.5 years and only two methanol dual fuel newbuilds due around 2027 to 2028, so modernization is progressing slowly. Management itself highlights low demolition and projected 2026 fleet growth of about 3.2% overall and more than 4% for Kamsarmax and Ultramax segments, which is consistent with concerns about structural oversupply. Operating expenses are already creeping up as crew and maintenance costs rise. Leverage also stays meaningful with about US$606m of long term debt and a US$175m bond maturing in 2029, reinforcing the view that an extended period of softer dry bulk demand or weaker asset values could pressure both cash flow and refinancing options.
