Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Nucor
Nucor Corporation NUE | 0.00 |
We wouldn't blame Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Stephen Laxton, the President & COO recently netted about US$1.0m selling shares at an average price of US$257. However, that sale only accounted for 4.8% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Nucor
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Vice President of Strategy, K. Query, for US$3.4m worth of shares, at about US$251 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$274, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 17% of K. Query's holding.
In the last year Nucor insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Nucor insiders own about US$333m worth of shares (which is 0.6% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
So What Do The Nucor Insider Transactions Indicate?
Insiders sold Nucor shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. On the plus side, Nucor makes money, and is growing profits. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
Of course Nucor may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.
