We wouldn't blame The Southern Company (NYSE:SO) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Stanley Connally, the Executive VP & COO recently netted about US$1.2m selling shares at an average price of US$97.13. However, it's crucial to note that they remain very much invested in the stock and that sale only reduced their holding by 6.6%.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Southern

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chairman, Kimberly Greene, for US$1.3m worth of shares, at about US$95.00 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$93.75. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Insider Ownership Of Southern

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Southern insiders own 0.1% of the company, currently worth about US$134m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

Insiders sold Southern shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales.
