We note that the Telos Corporation (NASDAQ:TLS) Independent Director, Derrick Dockery, recently sold US$53k worth of stock for US$4.43 per share. It might not be a huge sale, but it did reduce their holding size 17%, hardly encouraging.

Telos Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, Fredrick Schaufeld, sold US$1.7m worth of shares at a price of US$6.79 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$4.44). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In the last year Telos insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. I will like Telos better if I see some big insider buys.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Telos insiders own about US$53m worth of shares. That equates to 16% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Telos Tell Us?

Insiders sold Telos shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. We'd practice some caution before buying!
