eBay (EBAY) Stock Slips As Profit Stays Strong And Deal Risks Linger
eBay Inc. EBAY | 0.00 |
eBay stock slipped about 1% today and is down over the past month, even though the latest quarter delivered exactly what long term holders usually want. Earnings per share came in strong and gross profit stayed healthy while the core marketplace kept growing.
The main story is profitability. On a trailing basis eBay is generating a net profit margin of 18.3% and the stock trades at roughly 22x earnings. That is higher than the broader retail industry but below peer levels, which puts the focus on how durable this profit engine looks over the next few years.
If you appreciate eBay's healthy margins but are unsure whether its current P/E offers the right balance of quality and value, you can compare it with stocks that combine strong profitability with what appear to be more appealing valuations in our 50 high quality undervalued stocks

eBay bull case hinges on collectibles and recommerce flywheel
Bulls argue that eBay is already building the collectibles and recommerce infrastructure that Ryan Cohen wants to consolidate with GameStop and PSA. Q2 offers some concrete milestones. Focus categories now exceed 40% of GMV and grew 26%. Collectibles, motors, fashion and refurbished sit at the center of that. C2C and recommerce segments both rose more than 20% and now represent over 70% of GMV, which speaks directly to the idea of an intake to marketplace to custody loop. Off platform assets such as TCGplayer and Goldin are contributing, and eBay Live GMV is about 8x higher year on year with live buyers spending meaningfully more. That does not prove a full end to end collectibles stack yet. However, it does show eBay is hitting the operational milestones needed to be a credible platform partner rather than a passive asset in any GameStop led roll up.
Bear case focuses on deal risk, costs and governance overhang
On the bearish side, the key claim is that the GameStop bid and eBay’s investment cycle create more risk than upside. Q2 results partly support that caution. Marketing and Depop integration costs are already a concern for some analysts, and management itself flags near term earnings dilution from the US$1.4b Depop deal with accretion only targeted several years out. That aligns with worries that the recommerce push could weigh on profitability even as GMV grows. Governance and regulatory issues also remain in the background. The recent harassment settlement, Digital Services Act findings in Germany and ongoing UK and EU scrutiny keep trust and compliance squarely on the risk list at a time when hostile M&A and board process will be closely examined. Those elements give bears concrete process and execution hooks, even as the core marketplace trends look healthy.
