Usually, when one insider buys stock, it might not be a monumental event. But when multiple insiders are buying like they did in the case of Evolent Health, Inc. (NYSE:EVH), that sends out a positive message to the company's shareholders.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Evolent Health

The Co-Founder Seth Blackley made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$498k worth of shares at a price of US$9.01 each. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of US$11.18. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Evolent Health insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Evolent Health insiders own about US$22m worth of shares. That equates to 1.7% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
