World Bank Warns Middle East War Could Cut 2026 Global Growth to 1.3%

World Bank Chief Economist Indermit Gill warned an escalation of the war in the Middle East could slow global economic growth to 1.3% in 2026, down from 2.9% in 2025, potentially reigniting inflation and pushing interest rates higher. In a Reuters interview, Gill said the worst-case scenario — assuming the war continues six months or more — is increasingly likely, with global inflation possibly reaching 4.5%. Continued military exchanges and damage to regional oil infrastructure could worsen food insecurity by disrupting shipments of fertilizers, helium and sulfur, with poorer and heavily indebted countries most vulnerable.
