May 29 (Reuters) - Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri FCT.MI said on Friday its Norwegian subsidiary Vard had won a €700 million ($814 million) contract with U.S.-based research organization Inkfish to build a deep-sea research vessel.
"This represents the largest order ever secured by VARD for a single vessel, as well as the largest order of its kind for any Norwegian shipyard," Fincantieri said in a statement.
The vessel, named RV11000, is designed for seafloor mapping, coring and sampling, and remotely operated activities up to 11,000 meters deep
The vessel will feature one of the largest battery installations ever fitted on a ship, enabling up to 12 hours of silent operations for scientific missions
Delivery is expected in the first quarter of 2030
The hull will be built in Tulcea, Romania, while outfitting, commissioning and delivery will be carried out in Norway
