- Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri FCT.MI said on Friday its Norwegian subsidiary Vard had won a €700 million ($814 million) contract with U.S.-based research organization Inkfish to build a deep-sea research vessel.

"This represents the largest order ever secured by VARD for a single vessel, as well as the largest order of its kind for any Norwegian shipyard," Fincantieri said in a statement.

  • The vessel, named RV11000, is designed for seafloor mapping, coring and sampling, and remotely operated activities up to 11,000 meters deep

  • The vessel will feature one of the largest battery installations ever fitted on a ship, enabling up to 12 hours of silent operations for scientific missions

  • Delivery is expected in the first quarter of 2030

  • The hull will be built in Tulcea, Romania, while outfitting, commissioning and delivery will be carried out in Norway
