Freshpet (FRPT) Stock Jumps As Margin Gains Power Growth Story
Freshpet Inc FRPT | 0.00 |
Freshpet just served up the kind of quarter that makes a 14.6% one day jump in the stock look less like hype and more like a gut level repricing. Heading into the release, shares had already climbed strongly in recent months. The latest print added fuel, with Q2 net sales of US$305.6m and an adjusted gross margin of 48.6% standing out in a crowded pet food aisle.
The heart of this story is margin power. Adjusted EBITDA reached US$52.2m as the fresh pet food specialist showed it can turn shelf space, fridges and digital reach into operating leverage. The rest of the earnings picture comes next.
Is Freshpet’s 17.3% net margin and very strong earnings growth over the last year pointing to a genuine bargain, or just inflated by that US$48.3m one off gain? Compare the current P/E, DCF estimate and trailing profitability in one place on our valuation analysis for Freshpet

Freshpet Bull Case: Margin, TAM and Digital Milestones
Bulls argue Freshpet can turn its fresh pet food niche and Ennis production advances into sustained margin lift and faster cash generation. Q2 gives solid evidence on the margin leg of that story. Adjusted gross margin reached 48.6%, up 170 bps year on year, and adjusted EBITDA margin sat at 17.1%. Management did not just talk up the Ennis and Bethlehem technologies. They tied them to an expected gross margin benefit of more than 100 bps over time and built a 25 bps contribution into 2026 guidance.
The growth and total addressable market (TAM) narrative also gets support. Net sales grew 15.5% year on year with volume driving almost all of it. Household penetration across 52 weeks increased 5% and buying rate rose 7%. Digital orders grew 41% and reached 16.7% of sales, which directly backs the fridge plus e commerce leverage claim.

The bearish view on Freshpet centers on slowing category demand, rising competition and a cash hungry model that struggles to convert growth into free cash flow. Q2 does not fully clear those concerns. Volume drove almost all of the 15.5% net sales growth, while price and mix were slightly negative. That suggests limited pricing power at a time when rivals such as Hill’s are entering fresh pet food. Household penetration and buying rate moved up, yet management still leaned on heavy media spend at 13.4% of sales, which keeps customer acquisition costs elevated.
Free cash flow was only US$14.7m against capex of US$29.7m and a full year capex plan of about US$150m. Logistics costs increased as a share of sales and management now assumes roughly US$8m more logistics expense in 2026. The legal probe into “human grade” claims also keeps the execution and reputational risk flagged by bears firmly in play.
