FST's (NASDAQ:KBSX) Earnings Aren't As Good As They Appear
FST Corp. KBSX | 0.00 |
Strong earnings weren't enough to please FST Corp.'s (NASDAQ:KBSX) shareholders over the last week. We did some digging and found some underlying numbers that are worrying.
In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, FST issued 19% more new shares over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. How Is Dilution Impacting FST's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
Unfortunately, we don't have any visibility into its profits three years back, because we lack the data. Zooming in to the last year, we still can't talk about growth rates coherently, since it made a loss last year. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. So you can see that the dilution has had a bit of an impact on shareholders.
If FST's EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Finally, we should also consider the fact that unusual items boosted FST's net profit by US$1.1m over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. We can see that FST's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to June 2026. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.
Our Take On FST's Profit Performance
In its last report FST benefitted from unusual items which boosted its profit, which could make the profit seem better than it really is on a sustainable basis. And furthermore, it went and issued plenty of new shares, ensuring that each shareholder (who did not tip more money in) now owns a smaller proportion of the company. Considering all this we'd argue FST's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
