German economy minister says in intensive talks with U.S. on auto tariffs

- German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche said on Wednesday she was in intensive talks with U.S. officials over looming new car tariffs and that the issue of automotive manufacturing, exports and Germany's auto base was "a very central" one, adding she was hopeful they would "solve this challenge well together."

Her comments at a G7 trade ministers' meeting in Paris came after President Donald Trump said a few days ago he would raise tariffs on cars from the European Union to 25% from 15% this week, with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer telling EU and German officials over the weekend that Washington would move forward with the plan.
