We wouldn't blame Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Corie Barry, the CEO & Director recently netted about US$2.7m selling shares at an average price of US$64.02. However, it's crucial to note that they remain very much invested in the stock and that sale only reduced their holding by 7.5%.

Best Buy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Founder & Chairman Emeritus, Richard Schulze, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$39m worth of shares at a price of US$72.95 each. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$63.21). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Do The Best Buy Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders sold Best Buy shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. But since Best Buy is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
