We wouldn't blame Chemed Corporation (NYSE:CHE) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Kevin McNamara, the CEO, President & Director recently netted about US$1.1m selling shares at an average price of US$540. However, that sale only accounted for 2.8% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

Chemed Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by CEO, President & Director Kevin McNamara was not the only time they sold Chemed shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$461 per share in a -US$1.4m sale. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$540, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 3.0% of Kevin McNamara's stake.

Chemed insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership Of Chemed

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Chemed insiders own 1.6% of the company, worth about US$115m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The Chemed Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. On the plus side, Chemed makes money, and is growing profits. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
