We wouldn't blame The RealReal, Inc. (NASDAQ:REAL) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Rati Levesque, the President recently netted about US$927k selling shares at an average price of US$10.98. That sale reduced their total holding by 11% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At RealReal
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Gilbert Baird, sold US$3.1m worth of shares at a price of US$13.21 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$10.93. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.
In the last year RealReal insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Does RealReal Boast High Insider Ownership?
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that RealReal insiders own 8.8% of the company, worth about US$120m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About RealReal Insiders?
Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example, RealReal has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
