Home Depot stock gave up 2.9% today, yet the headline from this quarter is not a crack in demand. It is a quiet squeeze on profitability that clashes with the market’s quick verdict.

The company put up Q2 revenue of US$47.9b and adjusted earnings per share of US$4.92, with comparable sales up 1.7%. On the surface that looks steady for a big box home improvement retailer. The pressure point is underneath, where operating margin sat at 14.3% and return on invested capital slipped to 24.8%. That is where the real sentiment test lies for Home Depot now.

Home Depot bull case: Pro growth and digital proof points

Bulls argue that Home Depot’s Pro ecosystem and tech investments can support healthier growth once housing stabilizes. Q2 gives some concrete proof points. Pro comps were positive and ahead of DIY, and big ticket transactions over US$1,000 grew 2.4%, which fits the idea of deeper engagement with larger, complex projects. Management also called out strong SRS and GMS performance, broader Pro assortments and new tools like Project Planning and AI powered Material List Builder. Digital strength is not just a talking point. Online comp sales were up 11%, the app is the fastest growing digital surface and more than 65% of parcel orders shipped same or next day. Reaffirmed 2026 sales and EPS guidance suggests the Pro and fulfillment investments are at least keeping the long range plan on track rather than slipping.

Home Depot bear case: Margin squeeze and capital strain

Bears worry that Home Depot’s Pro pivot and capex heavy plan will pressure margins and returns. Q2 offers some support for that concern. Operating margin was 14.3%, and even on an adjusted basis sat at 14.7% compared with 14.8% a year ago. That is despite a one time tariff refund that lifted gross margin by about 85 bps net. Mix from GMS trimmed gross margin by roughly 60 bps, which is an early sign that distribution acquisitions are not yet accretive to margin. Return on invested capital slipped from 27.2% to 24.8% while capex reached about US$880m in the quarter and inventory increased to US$26.8b with slightly slower turns. The stock’s 2.85% decline after results shows that reassurance on guidance did not fully offset these profitability and capital efficiency worries.
